The Office for Film, Newspaper and Article Administration ("OFNAA") organised three webinars on "staying away from online objectionable materials" (the "webinar") on 25 November, 4 and 12 December 2024 to promote the key features of Control of Obscene and Indecent Articles Ordinance (Cap. 390), what students should bear in mind when using the Internet, measures implemented by the government for enforcing the ordinance, and related publicity and public education events. The webinars are targeted at principals of primary and secondary schools of Hong Kong or their representatives. Around 100 schools participated in these webinars.
Speaking at the webinar, the Assistant Director of Film, Newspaper and Article Administration, Mr Chris Fung, said that while the fascinating cyberworld could help young people obtain useful information for learning, young people could also come across a myriad of objectionable materials featuring, for example, violence or sexual content. In recent years, young people are particularly keen on using emerging platforms such as video streaming services, video sharing services, and social media in recent years. If they might encounter obscene or indecent materials through these platforms, they might be influenced by the distorted values in such materials. Indeed, they may contravene the Control of Obscene and Indecent Articles Ordinance if they share such materials with others on the Internet.
Mr Chris Fung stressed at the webinar that schools play an important role in educating young people not to access objectionable information. OFNAA will continue to organise a series of publicity and public education programmes to urge young people to stay away from obscene and objectionable materials on the Internet. He encouraged schools to participate actively in various promotional events held by OFNAA and prevent the harmful influence of online objectionable materials on young people, thereby helping them develop correct values and positive attitudes in the use of the Internet.
